Thanks to Rick and Bubba

Thanks to Rick and Bubba for having me on the show this morning. The guys really sold their teams hard and Brett Favre showing up was a pretty big surprise.  Check them out at  www.rickandbubba.com.

  1. Jason-

First off, let me congratulate you on your search for an NFL Team. Based on your other choices(LA, LA, and AL) it is clear to me that one thing matters greatly--A winning tradition. That basically gives you a handful of choices--The Cowboys, The Steelers, The Pats, maybe the Giants, even stretching to the history book, the schwag delivering Packers.

I have to be open and honest, off the bat; I am a Steelers fan. Always have been, Always will be. My dog is named Troy Polamalu. But let's look at tradition and the fit to your needs. The Steelers are the most well run, decorated, possibly not storied(insert Packers here) Franchise in the NFL. They have been around since 1933. They have won recently, but are off to a bad start so you would not be a bandwagon fan. They have the franchise QB, who is not a partying lady's man a la Brady or Romo. They have a great coach and a bonecrushing defense. Remind you of a certain era of football where AL was dominant? I am not sure where you live, but I live in Chicago and getting the Steelers on TV is a big deal for me, I am always pleasantly surprised by how often they are on TV even out of market. I actually considered getting Sunday Ticket, but didn't need to because roughly 12 of the 16 games will be on regular TV here. And if they aren't on regular TV, google "Steeler Bar" and chances are, there will be a pocket of Steeler fans near you to enjoy the experience with.

I could likely write all day, but I will supply my thoughts in segments, so as to not wear you out. I am sure you are constantly being barraged with obnoxious fans pulling this way and that. I am just a guy who loves my team and thinks it would be a good fit. Let me know what you think.

  3. How is there any question which team you should pull for? It should be simple: the Chicago Bears.

The reasons are too numerous to include all of them, but a few are:

    - They are one of THE original teams of professional football, whose founder George Halas was considered the Father of professional football.

    - They have more players in the NFL Hall of Fame than any other team.

    - They have more retired numbers than any other team.

    - Their 1985 team was and still is considered one of the top 3 if not perhaps the greatest team of all time

    - Watch "Brian's Song" with James Caan & Billy Dee Williams one time and try NOT becoming a fan

    - The addition of Jay Cutler has re-energized this team and will have them playing up to their potential

    - Bears fans are among the most rabid, loyal, and numerous of all in the country.

    - Two words: Walter Payton

    - The Chicago Bears once won a championship when they were NOT the favorite 73-0, a score that still stands today as the greatest margin of victory in a professional football game

    - Two words: Bronko Nagurski

    - No dome even in a city known for abusive weather, no astroturf either

I can't pretend to know what you are seeking, but having been a Bears fan since I could turn on a radio, I can say it is wonderful. If you have never been to Chicago you should come, as the variety and quality of food alone is second to none in the world.

I wish you luck in your search, and if you decide to choose the Chicago Bears, I can only say "welcome".

    GO BEARS!!!

  4. Jason,

What a fascinating project you've undertaken here, and I wish you the best of luck. I felt I could help you choose because I, like you, have no NFL team. I may be the only commenter here who is in the same situation as you (I didn't read all comments to check that).

I grew up loving sports in Tampa in the 70's and 80's. Since there was no local professional football team (ouch, Bucs), I grew up enjoying the sport but never really developed an allegiance. Like you, I am well-educated in the sport and know most of its skill position players, but have never really liked any one team. I've always enjoyed the sport itself tremendously.

I don't think you should base your decision on your fanhood on a teams' number of championships. That's called bandwagoning, plain and simple. No one should ever voluntarily decide to become a fan of the Cowboys or Steelers, or the Lakers, or the Yankees. They have enough people who came on board lately.

Think of this decision as an investment. You will put your passion out there, and you want the biggest return on your investment. So by definition, you want a team that has a chance to do something for the FIRST TIME. Nothing will ever match that experience. Perhaps they will do it magically, in a way that no one has ever done it before in all of sports history. Imagine this possibility.

I am a lifelong Red Sox fan, and I know this can happen.

You should pick a team that has a history of competitiveness, a solid organization, and an intensely loyal fan base, THAT HASN'T WON THE BIG ONE YET.

    You should pick the Bills.

  5. Love the site.

Full Disclosure: I am a Giants fan. They are a great franchise and you could do alot worse then picking them, but also I can't really be objective in telling you why to pick them.

However, under no circumstances pick the Dallas Cowboys, yes I'm biased here but that franchise is too overated, thier best players have all been thugs (cept Aikman and Stabauch) and they have too many bandwagon fans which overshadow thier real fans.

I think the Saints represent a good franchise to support, ( so do the G-men, but again I can't be objective about them)

They play in an awesome city

They haven't won a superbowl yet so you could expierence the first time euphoria with the rest of the fan base.

They have loyal fans and a cool "Who Dat" cheer

They had a one legged kicker back in the '70s

    Good Luck with your search.
